PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST

We're back from the a relaxing trip to the desert and amped with a few very exciting projects. Thought we start off by sharing the locale for a upcoming collabo with a special artist. I had to convince her to leave the studio untouched and unstyled, just love the rawness of it! Stay tuned...

COLLECTIVE LIVING

I feel fortunate to have a job that allows me to go into the personal spaces of some very talented designers. It's so revealing to see how people live when the cameras are off and often leaves me very inspired to perk up my own space. What I've mostly been intrigued by are personal collections, whether they are fabrics, jewelry, books or exotic treasures—how they are organized and curated has been very interesting to see. Here are a few shots from my recent trips.

LIVING WITH ART

One of my favorite sites, The Bold Italic, recently did a round up of homes that have been converted into art galleries in San Francisco, that is sure to add another bullet point to your to-do list. Don't let the "home" part fool you, as the article says "they’re skilled curators who’ve created respected destinations for collectors, while welcoming visitors to interact with the artists displaying their work". Check it out.

CREATIVE GROWTH

Today I finally visited Creative Growth, an Art Center that serves adult artists with developmental, mental and physical disabilities with a professional studio environment and gallery. The studio is amazing—there are various stations for the artists to work at: mosaics, tapestries, illustration, etc...and the best part is the works are available for sale. There are some seriously stunning pieces which make you feel especially good dropping in on. Do yourself a favor and visit their main studio in Oakland or smaller gallery in the Mission of San Francisco.

"Black Light" by Kehinde Wiley

The images from new book by Photographer, Kehinde Wiley, "Black Light" have recently caught our eye. The painterly poses and baroque graphic motifs, set against the personification of modern masculine street wear seems interesting.

Here's what Publishers, powerHouse, have to say about it: " In Black Light, his first monograph, Wiley’s larger-than-life figures disturb and interrupt tropes of portrait painting, often blurring the boundaries between traditional and contemporary modes of representation and the critical portrayal of masculinity and physicality as it pertains to the view of black and brown young men. The models are dressed in their everyday clothing, most of which is based on far-reaching Western ideals of style, and are asked to assume poses found in paintings or sculptures representative of the history of their surroundings. This juxtaposition of the “old” inherited by the “new”—who often have no visual inheritance of which to speak—immediately provides a discourse that is at once visceral and cerebral in scope. Measuring Your Own Grave

Thanks to a friend who works at David Zwirner, The Cabinet Shop went to Marlene Dumas' preview party at the MOMA last night. Previously unaware of her work, we came away appreciating the collection of deconstructed paintings. The show runs through February 16th.

Pommier Brothers

Just wanted to share the genius that is Andrew Pommier (above). We love his sketches and paintings. He also shares the artistic gift with brother Scott Pommier who is a very talented photographer that takes some rad serious portraits of some very un-serious pro skaters.

The above is a Cabinet Shop hero, Ed Templeton.

Illustrate or Die

This lone ranger likes long walks through deserted towns, heart shaped boxes and suspenders.  If you're interested in taking him home, contact Michael Sieben, from where he came.  Sieben on the other hand lives in Austin, writes and illustrates for Thrasher, just showed at Fecal Face gallery in SF and is a seriously talented artist. Thanks to the peeps of Lifelounge for this...

Icon Man

Robert Rauscenberg, one of the most prolific American artists of our time, passed away last night. His work has forever changed the art game and has always spoke to us. He did not let just one medium define or constrain him, nor ever played it safe. We hope his life, his work and his philosophy can serve as an inspiration to all you artist out there. The Times has a great piece on the master.
